Software Tool Fully Automates Drafting of Mandurah Freeway Extension Noisewalls Saving Months off Project

A recent project for GHD automated the calculation and drafting of the concrete noise-walls for the freeway south extension in Western Australia. 

The Business Issue

For every section of the freeway south extension, calculations needed to be undertaken to design noisewalls to the correct footing depth, base and wall thickness, height and width.  Height datum contained within a separate database needed to be extracted for the entire length of the freeway extension and a set method of calculation applied to the design of each span of noisewall.  Projections showed the job was going to take many months, due to the sheer length of the freeway.

Summary

Because of the repetitive nature of this drafting operation, the problem lent itself to an custom, automated software solution.  KKL designed and implemented a software solution that automatically drafted all the noisewalls drawing on height datum in a separate database and using an algorithm to work out the noisewall specifications.  An operation that was due to take many man months was completed in a matter of minutes.

Highlight

Human design ingenuity combined with raw computer processing power to cut many man months off the end of the project.  Instead of designing each section of wall, we designed a tool that would automate the job.  Additionally, GHD continues to enjoy productivity gains from continuing to use a tool they invested in once.  There was a better way and KKL delivered it.  After seeing the improvements on this project, GHD is now looking to see what KKL software solutions can be applied organisation wide.
