GHD Engineering - As Constructed Document Preparation Module Massively Boosts Productivity

The Business Issue

A client of GHD required specific output when drawings were issued to them, including trimming x-refs, updating and referencing title blocks (with data taken from separate spreadsheet), outputting to .zip and .pdf, and emailing to specified recipients.  For every revision, this process was manually undertaken for 6000+ drawings and amounted to a full time job.  It was laborious, tedious and manual.  There had to be a better way!

Summary

KKL built a custom application that fully automated the formatting and output of AutoCAD drawings.  An Excel spreadsheet was integrated with AutoCAD, enabling title block reference information to be imported automatically. The whole previously manual process was reduced to a few button clicks within AutoCAD.  Clients are not always aware of the versatility of AutoCAD and in this case, KKL's solution proved to be both elegant and highly effective.  Staff could then be pulled off this monotonous and boring task, reducing the risk of staff turnover - and allowing that employee to be redirected to more skilled tasks.

Whereas previously drawings were revised and issued only every six months due to workload constraints, drawings now are issued faster and more frequently.  KKL's experience in this niche ensured that they built a tool that completely automated this monotonous process, thereby saving the clients vast amounts of time, not to mention money.
